Everyone’s into ‘counting calories’, but not all calories are created equal, if you think about calories you have two types, ‘Building Block’ calories which would be Fats and Proteins and then you have ‘Energy’ calories which would be Carbohydrates.

Now using this Building Block/Energy analogy imagine your body is a house renovation, if you have too many building blocks, which might be bricks, plaster boards, nails, paint etc. you can always take them back, sell them on to another developer or use on another job at a later date.

Now imagine you have too much energy, which in this case would be 10 workmen instead of 5, what do the extra 5 do all day? Sit around, do a bit of ‘tidying’, basically it’s useless and they’re lack of work today can’t be carried over to another day, it’s just a waste!

Now this is what happens in your body, the excess energy is surplus to requirements, you don’t use it today and your wage bill (see, belly fat) gets bigger and bigger and you go more and more into debt, the answer?, simple, lay some of the workmen off (it is a recession after all) and get that wage bill down, get your energy balance right and focus on top quality building blocks and you’ll reap the benefits.

Carbohydrates are fine to consume but to quote Udo Erasmus ‘if you don’t burn ‘em, you wear ‘em!’

People’s obsession with consuming more Carbs in fear of being fatigued is, to put it politely ‘bullshit’, try reducing your Carb intake to vegetables and fruits and see how your energy is, after a few days of adjustment you’ll see there’s nothing to worry about and your clothes will start to loosen up too.

Consider this, there are essential Fats, termed EFA’s, which include Omega 3 and 6, there are essential Proteins, termed essential Amino Acids, but there are NO ESSENTIAL CARBOHYDRATES!

Give it a try and cut that belly debt down!

On Saturday evening Kelly and I were driving to some friends, we were chatting about a seminar that was on and I said I had no interest in it and I wouldn’t be attending, basically I don’t want to spend my time on things I see no value in.

Jokingly she asked ‘Do you see value in me?’ I rubbed her bump and said ‘You’re growing in value every day!’

This got me thinking, what do we do (or not do) that makes us grow in value, to ourselves and to others, not monetary value, but real value?

What’s your value grown by?

What if you improve your health? Surely you’ve improved your value to yourself but what about your kids, or your partner? Maybe a partner you’ve not even met yet!!!

What about coming to Prime Mover and performing Squats and Lunges (properly), you’ve increased your Glute strength which will have a carry over into less back pain, now or in the future, that’s got to be an increase to yourself (and maybe the NHS!)

Increased your knowledge? That certainly increases your value, but what if you ‘pay it forward’ and pass that knowledge onto someone else, now you’ve increased your value to them AND their value!

What if you stopped smoking? You’re increasing your value to a LOT of people there, how about giving up the booze for a month, 3 months, A YEAR? You’ll increase your value to yourself more than you can imagine and you might just inspire someone else to try it too, increasing their value in the process.

How about if you helped someone in some way? You’ve certainly grown in value to them, you’ll grow in value to yourself and to any others that know what you’ve done, obviously not the aim but a nice by-product of whatever you do.

It could be as simple as letting someone in while driving, instead of blocking them out! You’ve increased your value to yourself by not causing a big stress response that would stay with you for the next few hours (whether you know it or not) and maybe the guy (yes it’s probably a bloke) pushing in appreciates it too.

Maybe holding a door for someone or even just if you smiled at someone rather than stare blankly in their face? What difference would that make?

There’s lots of things you could do, like they say ‘watch the penny’s and the pounds look after themselves’, all the little things which take hardly any effort can make you a very valuable person indeed!

At Prime Mover I deal with inspirational people every day, people who have turned their lives, health and fitness on it’s head and are now looking forward to a much (hopefully) longer, happier and fruitful life.

I know these people are inspirational to more than just me because they’ve then introduced new people to the ways of Prime Mover, they’re now passed the ‘Join It’ phase, they’ve also ‘Learnt It’ and now they’re ‘Living It’ to full effect!

We have people who have completely changed their old (bad) habits and have seen their knee pain completely disappear (MG), there’s people who are now so fit they can enter regional races and feel confident not only that they’ll finish but with a respectable time too! (SR)

Some people’s Before and After shots are so dramatic outsiders must think they’ve had surgery (WC), whatever the outcome we have a lot of people that are wowing a lot of other people, I just love to be part of it!

Now in about 11 weeks time there will be a new little Mover on the scene and as she gets nearer I’m starting to think, how can I be the best inspiration possible?

For starters I don’t want her being embarrassed by her old man on Sports Day! My new schedule will cover all the bases, strength, size, power, flexibility and endurance. Focussing on one aspect has left my endurance sorely lacking, which was exposed in last weeks Endurer Event and my Flexibility is about the same as the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz!

Don’t be a Fat Dad! For me the key to this is stress management, with everything I have going on stress can easily take hold and that’s when slips in my diet occur, yes even me!

Stress management will coincide nicely with my new flexibility routine, I know Rennie will ask the question ‘when are you going to fit this in?’ but as they say on RyanAir ‘fit your own mask before helping others’ – it’s time I followed that advice.

I want her to be proud of the business I’ve built, which by the time she has any idea what’s going on should have helped literally thousands of people improve their lives, much further afield than just Sheffield too.

I want to answer any questions she has, so from today the TV is limited to one week night evening and one weekend evening a week, education is the priority and watching mindless s**t won’t further my knowledge, no matter how amusing it is.

Have time – this goes for her and her Mum, organising myself better so when I’m home I’m actually there! Time goes so quickly and the older I get the faster it goes, I don’t want to miss a thing with her!

I’m sure there’s plenty of other areas I can shape up on but if I can nail this to start with I’ll be a good way along the road to inspiring the most important person in my life!

A few weeks ago the guys at Exposed magazine asked me to enter The Endurer race, 8km up hill and down dale with obstacles every few hundred metres.

Easy peasey I thought!

Today was the day and with absolutely zero specific training and no running under my belt since playing ‘Tiggy’ at school we started on a hill so steep you could use it to stretch out your calves, this was going to be harder than I thought.

After the initial climb (which I think was about 200m but felt like a mile) it was a quick descent through the trees into the muddy bog, literally up to my knees in mud, before reaching the sandbag carry, up a hill and back down, at this point things were ok, there were another few obstacles including hurdles, net crawls and a rope climb and then it was just running…….

……on and on, zig zagging across the countryside, only the odd twisted ankle to break things up!

At what I think was the halfway mark there was the Tunnel Crawl, this is where my body got as muddy as my legs and where I found out I’m a bit claustrophobic, panic attack averted it was time to go up another hill, 2 minutes later a Marshall tells me I’m doing well and ‘it’s all down hill from here’ – unfortunately he’s a lying bastard!

The first two thirds of the second half of the course are the worst, just running, up and down, backwards and forwards, you can see where you’re heading and it’s about 200 metres away but you have to double back on yourself time after time, the only obstacle on this section is the 7m wall you have to get over, unfortunately for me I don’t negotiate it very well and basically just run into it, the Marshall tells me ‘you were looking pretty good up until then!’ – ‘Thanks pal’ I mutter before backing up and having a more successful run at it.

Another couple of kilometres of soul destroying plodding and my lungs are burning, my knees are aching and my ankles are sore, then I get to the last section, now we’re back into obstacle territory, a scramble net followed by some hurdles and then a massive (I assume) 10 foot wall, this has plastic climbing finger grips but I decide to jump to the top spurred on by a 5 year old shouting ‘Come on 374′, after that it’s a few hay bales to climb over and we’re almost done.

The last bit is a water slide down a hill and then the final straight, I get in with a time of 1 hour and 2 minutes, I even beat the Marine, but apparently he got lost!

In summary:
Was it a good event? – Certainly
Did I enjoy it? – Not in the slightest
Will I do it again? – Probably

Are you an Almond or a crumb?

This morning I was getting some food ready for the day and I got out a box of Almonds, as I shook the box all the little pieces and crumbs disappeared as the whole Almonds rose to the top, the same happens with flour, that’s what the sifting is all about.

So, my thought for the day is when someone shakes your box do you rise to the top or do you sink to the bottom?

If I asked you why you hadn’t trained this week would you make excuses or admit you’d been lazy?

If I asked why you’d not stuck to your nutrition would you try to defend it or would you knuckle down and give it the commitment it requires?

If you were asked why you’d not been ‘present’ in your families lives recently would blame work or would you pledge to make time?

If you asked yourself if you were making the most out of your life would you shrug it off and say there’s plenty of time left or would you refocus and make the most of every day?

If you’re going with the latter of each of these answers then you’re an Almond, someone shakes you up and you rise to the top!

Nice work!

So imagine you’ve just bought your brand new car, all shiny with that new car smell, the sun bouncing off the newly polished paintwork, the stereo’s blaring out and you’re loving life

then, SMASH!!!!

You wrap it round a tree!

Who do you call?

The Police, Ambulance maybe, certainly your Insurance company!

Would you call the Car Dealer and tell him there’s a fault with the car? Would you explain to him you never asked for an Oak Tree as an optional extra, that maybe it’s not running right?!

No, because he’d politely explain to you that the car was fine when you left and the fact that you ‘misused’ the product is not really something they can help you with.

Now I know you’re thinking ‘I know all this already, this is ridiculous, why would someone call the Dealer if they smashed the car’

Then why, why, WHY do we constantly get people ‘misusing’ our ‘product’?!

And then bitching about it not working!!!!

We explain what they can and can’t eat, we provide recipes, menu’s, countless compliant substitutions and yet people still decide to ignore the advice and then moan that their results aren’t what they’d hoped for!

You get out what you put in people, get with the program!

If you stick to the rules then we can guarantee your diet won’t get wrapped round a tree!

So last Saturday night I did my marathon 10 hour DJ set and in doing so closed the book on a 12 year career.

All the week previous was spent sorting through boxes of old vinyl, some of it from as far back as 1996, it all brought back so many memories and I knew it would for the people there on Saturday night too.

Something I noticed when sorting through them was how crackly the records sounded right at the start, but then by the main part of the track they were fine, and it got me thinking about how this relates to people’s weight loss and fitness efforts.

The reason the records are crackly at the start is that the first 60-90 seconds of a record is the part that gets played the most, for every time a record gets played it’s the first part that gets played 3,4 maybe even 5 times.

A little lesson in DJing for those of you that don’t know, when you’re trying to get the records to run in time with each other you have to play one from the start and try to adjust the speed on the turntable until they’re running together, you repeat this over and over and depending on your level of skill this can be many times but throughout your learning curve you learn to drop it in once and get the speed right that first time.

Now the type of music I play is structured in such a way that it builds up and the really interesting part of a track might be 2-3 minutes in, this is where the dieting/fitness parallel starts!

Almost everyone (and I mean 90+% of people) starts their new ‘diet’ with good intentions, but just like the New Years Resolutions that have waned over the last few weeks these ‘good intentions’ subside, then disappear into the ether.

Then something reignites the desire to lose weight/get fit/tone up (all of the above) and off they (YOU) go again, fine for a week, maybe even a month, then it’s a works do, a birthday, any excuse that comes to mind, and it all caves in again!

This, just like the record, is the ‘Well Worn Groove’, people are constantly working through the boring, crackly part and they (YOU) never get to the good bit!

As a DJ if I just played the first 2 minutes of each record and nothing more then everyone would walk off the dance floor in a matter of minutes, because people never stick to their nutrition plans for long enough they invariably walk off the ‘weight loss dance floor’ long before they’ve seen any of the results they could see if they stuck it out to the ‘good bit’.

Author Seth Godin writes in his book The Dip about how in anything there’s a point where the effort seems to outweigh the return, and people cave in because it’s not human nature to persist in this situation, but as he explains, with continued effort in the right direction not long after ‘the dip’ there’s a steep upward curve that reaches the desired result!

If the plan laid out for you has a proven track record then we can assume this is the right direction, all it needs is you to apply the effort and keep applying it just long enough for you to start seeing the return on your investment!

Then you’ll never look back!

I love to see those big white windmills, especially when there’s loads of them on a hillside or in a field, there’s something quite hypnotic about them as they spin round and round, but what drives me insane is when you see one of them stood still, why, why, WHY!

The cost of putting one of those bad boys up must be fairly hefty, and if all the others are spinning then why not this one? It’s just a massive waste, of potential energy, of a difference that could be made and of a positive change for the world.

So it got me thinking, how many people do I know (you know) that are like a lazy windmill?

The people that have the opportunity to make a difference but don’t, either for other people or themselves.

The people that think just being present is enough without actually contributing anything constructive.

The people who moan that everything is too much effort, hard work, time-consuming or all of the above.

The people who don’t want to try, don’t want to stretch themselves, or don’t want to commit to anything as that would appear weak. (Surely if I have to apply myself my ability will be called into question! – is the mantra of these people).

The people who you just want to grab their propeller and give it a good spin!!!!!

You know the ones!

I don’t have the definitive answer on how to jolt these people into action but I do think that by being a windmill that spins faster than any other the sheer force you create will set off a few of the lazy ones.

And, the more spinning windmills we have the better off everyone will be.

Inspire others to action, don’t be a lazy windmill.

As I write this I’m sat in Edinburgh airport on my way home from my penultimate UK DJ performance, at the end of February I will be performing my last gig with a 10 hour set at the UK’s best club, Storm.

Much interest has been circulating as to why I’m walking away from a 12 year career in music, the answer? My passion is now in assisting people achieve positive changes in their lifestyle and my process for helping as many people as possible is via my group Personal Training brand, Prime Mover.

The step away from music is two-fold, give myself the time to devote to building Prime Mover, and remove any distractions from my focus which has to be laser-beam!

I’ve had to do a few interviews in the run up to my retirement and when asked ‘how can you give it all up?’ my answer is simple, I have no blanks to fill in after the ‘four saddest words’

The four saddest words are:

If only I had…..

The one thing I had always wanted to do was a 10 hour set, yes this means standing in one spot, listening to very loud dance music and concentrating extremely hard, for 10 hours straight!

Quite a feat and something that has never (to my knowledge) been done before by a DJ in my genre of dance music. In the past I’ve done a couple of 6 hour sets and even an 8 hour but the double digits is something I’d always aspired to do.

At the end of February I get to tick it off my list and in doing so put that career to rest knowing I’ve done everything I could, should and ever would have.

But this got me thinking, what if you get to the end of a career, a project, a LIFE and you haven’t done all you can?

What things go through people’s minds when it is too late to do anything about it, and not just on a professional level, what about personal stuff, the experiences you’d like to have, the interactions you know you should have, but don’t, the relationships you should nurture?

I’m pretty sure no-one on their deathbed says ‘If only I had spent more time at the office’ or ‘If only I had spent less time with my family and friends’

Here are a few thoughts I have for things that could fill in the blanks after these four sad words.

If only I had…

given it 100%

experienced more

not looked at effort or hard work as a negative

taken the risk of that new job

made it to my kid’s school play

walked away from my abusive partner

cut off the energy vampires

delivered what I promised

not wasted my time

told them how I felt

learnt more

stuck to the nutrition plan

travelled more

done something I loved

had more sex

thought about my budget before committing myself

spent more time in the moment

given more

told my boss to stick it when he piled all the extra work on me

thought it through

loved more

appreciated what I had

taken less

been nicer

wasted less time on mindless TV

considered my lifestyle before the heart attack

not been so greedy

believed in myself more

This list is only just skimming the surface but you get the idea, there are points throughout life where any of these could be applicable, some maybe on your deathbed, but how good would it be if you lived a life where at the end of the month, year, life, you could look back and have nothing to fill in the blanks with?

Over the Christmas period I was thinking about how we can pay back our loyal members (aside from the awesome results, fantastic workouts and scintillating conversation), you know who you are, the guys that have been with us since the beginning of (Prime Mover) time, the new people who immediately get into the lifestyle and are smashing it every month, the guys and gals who recommend us to their friends and explain how ‘not like a gym’ we actually are!

I thought ‘these people need more recognition, more rewards, more Thank You’s!’

So we’re currently pulling together Prime Mover Points, this will be the loyalty scheme and will work like this:

For every month you’re a Prime Mover member (from January 2012) you receive 1 point.

For every referral you bring to Prime Mover (that converts to a Member) you receive 3 points.

Our Challenges will have points values attached to them for people who successfully reach their targets too.

When points have been built up they will be able to be ‘cashed in’ for various goods and services, both at Prime Mover and with our partner companies, some of the things our Points will be good for:

1:1 Training sessions
Haircut vouchers for Wigs & Warpaint
Dinner for 2 at a Sheffield restaurant
Detox packs
Supplements
Flower Bouquets

This list is by no means exhaustive and we’ll be looking to add to the list periodically when we find other goods and services that tie in with our ethics.

So all you have to do to be able to make the most of this brand new service is keep blasting your sessions out, smash it in the Challenges and tell as many people as possible about the mighty Prime Mover!

Over and out,
