I love to see those big white windmills, especially when there’s loads of them on a hillside or in a field, there’s something quite hypnotic about them as they spin round and round, but what drives me insane is when you see one of them stood still, why, why, WHY!

The cost of putting one of those bad boys up must be fairly hefty, and if all the others are spinning then why not this one? It’s just a massive waste, of potential energy, of a difference that could be made and of a positive change for the world.

So it got me thinking, how many people do I know (you know) that are like a lazy windmill?

The people that have the opportunity to make a difference but don’t, either for other people or themselves.

The people that think just being present is enough without actually contributing anything constructive.

The people who moan that everything is too much effort, hard work, time-consuming or all of the above.

The people who don’t want to try, don’t want to stretch themselves, or don’t want to commit to anything as that would appear weak. (Surely if I have to apply myself my ability will be called into question! – is the mantra of these people).

The people who you just want to grab their propeller and give it a good spin!!!!!

You know the ones!

I don’t have the definitive answer on how to jolt these people into action but I do think that by being a windmill that spins faster than any other the sheer force you create will set off a few of the lazy ones.

And, the more spinning windmills we have the better off everyone will be.

Inspire others to action, don’t be a lazy windmill.

As I write this I’m sat in Edinburgh airport on my way home from my penultimate UK DJ performance, at the end of February I will be performing my last gig with a 10 hour set at the UK’s best club, Storm.

Much interest has been circulating as to why I’m walking away from a 12 year career in music, the answer? My passion is now in assisting people achieve positive changes in their lifestyle and my process for helping as many people as possible is via my group Personal Training brand, Prime Mover.

The step away from music is two-fold, give myself the time to devote to building Prime Mover, and remove any distractions from my focus which has to be laser-beam!

I’ve had to do a few interviews in the run up to my retirement and when asked ‘how can you give it all up?’ my answer is simple, I have no blanks to fill in after the ‘four saddest words’

The four saddest words are:

If only I had…..

The one thing I had always wanted to do was a 10 hour set, yes this means standing in one spot, listening to very loud dance music and concentrating extremely hard, for 10 hours straight!

Quite a feat and something that has never (to my knowledge) been done before by a DJ in my genre of dance music. In the past I’ve done a couple of 6 hour sets and even an 8 hour but the double digits is something I’d always aspired to do.

At the end of February I get to tick it off my list and in doing so put that career to rest knowing I’ve done everything I could, should and ever would have.

But this got me thinking, what if you get to the end of a career, a project, a LIFE and you haven’t done all you can?

What things go through people’s minds when it is too late to do anything about it, and not just on a professional level, what about personal stuff, the experiences you’d like to have, the interactions you know you should have, but don’t, the relationships you should nurture?

I’m pretty sure no-one on their deathbed says ‘If only I had spent more time at the office’ or ‘If only I had spent less time with my family and friends’

Here are a few thoughts I have for things that could fill in the blanks after these four sad words.

If only I had…

given it 100%

experienced more

not looked at effort or hard work as a negative

taken the risk of that new job

made it to my kid’s school play

walked away from my abusive partner

cut off the energy vampires

delivered what I promised

not wasted my time

told them how I felt

learnt more

stuck to the nutrition plan

travelled more

done something I loved

had more sex

thought about my budget before committing myself

spent more time in the moment

given more

told my boss to stick it when he piled all the extra work on me

thought it through

loved more

appreciated what I had

taken less

been nicer

wasted less time on mindless TV

considered my lifestyle before the heart attack

not been so greedy

believed in myself more

This list is only just skimming the surface but you get the idea, there are points throughout life where any of these could be applicable, some maybe on your deathbed, but how good would it be if you lived a life where at the end of the month, year, life, you could look back and have nothing to fill in the blanks with?

Over the Christmas period I was thinking about how we can pay back our loyal members (aside from the awesome results, fantastic workouts and scintillating conversation), you know who you are, the guys that have been with us since the beginning of (Prime Mover) time, the new people who immediately get into the lifestyle and are smashing it every month, the guys and gals who recommend us to their friends and explain how ‘not like a gym’ we actually are!

I thought ‘these people need more recognition, more rewards, more Thank You’s!’

So we’re currently pulling together Prime Mover Points, this will be the loyalty scheme and will work like this:

For every month you’re a Prime Mover member (from January 2012) you receive 1 point.

For every referral you bring to Prime Mover (that converts to a Member) you receive 3 points.

Our Challenges will have points values attached to them for people who successfully reach their targets too.

When points have been built up they will be able to be ‘cashed in’ for various goods and services, both at Prime Mover and with our partner companies, some of the things our Points will be good for:

1:1 Training sessions
Haircut vouchers for Wigs & Warpaint
Dinner for 2 at a Sheffield restaurant
Detox packs
Supplements
Flower Bouquets

This list is by no means exhaustive and we’ll be looking to add to the list periodically when we find other goods and services that tie in with our ethics.

So all you have to do to be able to make the most of this brand new service is keep blasting your sessions out, smash it in the Challenges and tell as many people as possible about the mighty Prime Mover!

Over and out,

I always thought this was a ‘poorly educated Body Builder’ phenomenon but I think it may be more widespread than that, Back training is an all too often missed component in many peoples training regime, and one that needs to be address sooner rather than later.

For most people their days are spent sat, a lot, some of our clients are on their backsides for up to 14 hours a day, when you consider travelling on a bus, train or in a car, sitting at a desk all day and then sofa time when you get home, it all adds up!

The problem is that we end up with muscles getting put under stresses they should never actually have, due to the constant sitting position, the muscles across the front of the hips, the Hip Flexors (or Iliopsoas) become tight and shortened which leads to postural dysfunctions throughout the hip area, the lower back can become compressed and tight as a direct result of this, further up the back the deep muscles designed to hold the shoulder blades in position, the Rhomboids, become elongated and weak, which is compounded by the muscles across the front of the shoulders, Anterior Deltoids and the chest, the Pectorals, tightening up and effectively pulling the shoulders into a rounded position.

The big muscles in the back that are designed for pulling the arm backwards, the Latissimus Dorsi, are rarely used for more the pulling a door open so they can become weak too. Then as we sit leaning into the computer we have to tilt our heads back to compensate which then over-works the neck muscles and the superficial muscles of the upper back, the Levator Scapulae and Upper Trapezius, so we have tightness appearing again where it shouldn’t really be.

If you think you might be tight in any of these areas mentioned or if your daily routine involves a lot of sitting and not much physical activity then you’re probably a prime candidate for suffering from these issues now or in the near future, on YouTube there are loads of great videos showing how to stretch any tight areas, you can try the stretch, if it’s difficult and/or painful then working that area would be a good idea.

As for strengthening the weak areas, when working out be sure to consider all your muscles, not just the ones you can see in the mirror, for every ‘push’ exercise make sure you perform a ‘pull’ exercise too, unfortunately working the Back muscles requires some equipment so if you’re working out at home some Dumb Bells, a Kettlebell or a Suspension Trainer will be needed.

If you’re training at a gym then the equipment will be there, you’re probably best to ask a Trainer to show you 3 or 4 different exercises for your Back, my recommendations would be:

Deadlifts

Bent Over Rows

Suspension Trainer High Rows

Back Extensions

So that’s it, be aware of the potential damage not looking after your Back can have, keep yourself mobile, stretch and strengthen, and remember, looking ‘back’ can help you move forwards!

Last week I had the worst week of 2012, granted we’re only 3 weeks in, but still, it was terrible.

We had a death in the family, I had to pay out £320 to get the damage on my car fixed and I got a parking ticket from the lovely people at Islington council, £130!

By the end of the week I was pretty pissed off, de-motivated and feeling really quite negative about everything, not like me at all.

So over the weekend I had a word with myself, put things into perspective and decided to move forwards, by Monday I was feeling much better, even though my Auntie was still gone, my wallet was still down £320 and Islington council were still on my back.

So nothing had changed, except my mindset, I figured there’s no point dwelling on the crappy things that are going off when there’s so much opportunity out there!

What has happened this week (and it’s only Wednesday) is a reinforcement of my beliefs that ‘you attract what you focus on’, unlike last week where my negativity was attracting more negative things, this week with my regular, positive mindset I’ve discovered my new car doesn’t actually need a deposit, that’s £380 I thought I had to pay out, the same car comes with 1 years free insurance which I didn’t know about, awesome, and our hard work at Prime Mover is paying off as we near the 300 mark on our membership, mega-awesome!

Moral of the story is, ‘keep your mind on the good things and forget the crap’, usually you can’t do anything about the crap anyway, and by focussing on all that is great in your life you’ll just attract more.

At Prime Mover we held a Christmas Challenge, the rules were simple, get weighed before the Christmas break, then again the first week back and if the difference was 3lbs or less then you qualified for the draw.

The prize was 2 months 1:1 Personal Training with yours truly!

We had a lot of great results with a few people actually dropping weight over the festive period too.

But, do you actually want to win?

The rules of the game:

Food Diary submission every 7 days, 100% compliance is critical, 3 strikes and you’re out

Zero alcohol for 2 months – any social events you’ll have to opt out of or pretend you’re on Antibiotics

3 HARD training sessions per week (these may be at unusual times too due to my other commitments), these will be on top of any Prime Mover sessions you attend.

The sessions will start first week of February and run until the end of March – if you’re on holiday in that period, sorry, you’re out!

The ability to complete Home Workouts to supplement your time with me, these may range from 5 minutes to 15 minutes.

A nominal spend on supplementation will be expected to aid your results, £25 per month tops!

Before and after pictures will be required, and full use as promo after the 2 months are complete

1st session with me will be a full Kinetic Chain Assessment (normally £65 – adding more value to the prize), this will aid your overall result too.

So all in all the total value of this prize is in excess of £1000, but I’m going to get £1000′s worth of work out of someone, will it be YOU?!

If you think you qualified for the Challenge and you think you can cope with everything I’ve listed here reply to the Facebook thread for this Blog post and the winner will be announced on Monday 23rd January.

I’ll see YOU in the gym,

Paul Glazby

With the recent surge of New Year weight-loss media, all ranging from established TV shows we’ve come to expect and new shows with even more outrageous caricatures of Personal Trainers in them, to the wave of adverts from big brand ‘Diet’ solutions fronted by women who almost certainly have never used the system and then every second magazine espousing the new magic diet/food/pill that will see you shedding 3 stone in a fortnight, it really is no wonder that people are ‘lost in the wilderness’ when it comes to looking after themselves.

What my focus is for this particular ‘Soapbox’ is the TV shows, now not all the shows are bad and I know for a fact some of the Trainers are outstanding as I actually know them, I think the problem is the TV production companies want to create some extreme television, so you have characters looking like a Dominatrix, The Hulk and an albino Mr T, putting people through torturous workouts, shouting in their faces and not showing any of the intelligence, compassion or empathy that a good Trainer would show.

I’d bet my house that in a normal environment these TV Trainers don’t act the same as when the cameras are rolling!

What does this mean for the masses?

Well I think it’s counter-productive because all you end up with is thousands if not millions of people saying ‘sod that, I’m not going to a Trainer if that’s how they treat you’, then A LOT of people who would benefit from some supervised exercise, miss out.

The TV companies do a great job in getting the Fitness Industry some much needed exposure but sadly their method of glorifying the ‘Drill Sergeant’ results in a poor hit rate when it comes to positive perception of an industry that can and should be able to help so many people.

In my experience both as a 1:1 Personal Trainer and as a group PT Instructor the workouts, results and stories that go on every day would make brilliant television and would paint a much prettier picture of what really happens inside a facility that is dedicated to people’s health, weight loss and well-being.

Let’s hope over time these shows get less cartoon-like and more ‘real-world’ so they become an advert rather than the current situation of negative press.

Don’t hold your breath though

One of the simplest ways to increase your health is to add Avocados to your weekly regime.

In this modern Western world we all too often stick to the same old fruits and vegetables, if we eat vegetables at all, as an example my cousin at age 49 had until recently never tried Avocado, unfortunately for him the one he tried wasn’t ripe so it was a bit like trying to eat a shoe, but I’m sure he’ll have another go, hopefully before he’s 50!

Avocados are actually a fruit, with a tough-looking leathery skin they are sometimes called ‘Alligator Pears’ (a much cooler name to be fair!), once inside the skin a ripe Avocado is soft, mushy even, it has a large stone in the centre, about the size of a Golf ball.

The taste of Avocado is quite bland in comparison to most fruits, but it is however very palatable, the fact it can be mashed very easily makes it a great mixer, I like to add some Tabasco and black pepper to make a filling for a folded omelette, Mexican style!

The real benefits of Avocado are what it does inside your body, not inside your mouth!

It has a high fat content, now don’t go running for the hills, Weight Watchers got it wrong, fat isn’t the enemy, especially not mono-unsaturated fat which is the main constituent of an Avocado’s fat.

The fat in the Avocado will aid with satiety, meaning you won’t get hungry so quickly, so just like we know Olive Oil is our friend, the oil of the ‘Alligator Pear’ is just as friendly.

As a little side note: Avocados have the second highest fat content of any fruit, coming in behind Olives!

High levels of Potassium, Copper, Iron and Magnesium can be found in Avocados making them useful for healthy blood and to aid with with the heart and the nervous system, conversely they are low in sugar and free from starch so anyone who is Diabetic, or for those looking to avoid Diabetes (who isn’t?) they are an excellent choice.

So that should hopefully create enough of a case for you to at least try the Alligator Pear, they certainly will help you in your fight for a healthier you, just don’t end up like my cousin, give it a little squeeze before you cut it, if it’s as hard as a rock leave it another couple of days!

I’ve just had an epiphany as I drove home from my morning Prime Mover sessions, I thought to myself ‘one of my New Year’s Resolutions is to keep my car tidy’, but as quick as I’d thought it I realised that just saying the words is pretty pointless without any plan of action!

You see most New Year’s Resolutions are over with by the end of January because all that’s been done is saying the words ‘I will…..’, ‘I won’t…….’, ‘I’m giving up…….’, without really drilling down into ‘Why’ and ‘How’!

So for me the ‘How’ is keeping a bag in the car to throw my banana skins and water bottles in and then transferring that to my Wheelie Bin and replacing with a new bag every couple of days, the ‘Why’ is so that I don’t look like such a tramp when I give a lift to someone! And to give myself a better sense of organisation in my life.

For some people the ‘How’ could be:

* Make excuses for any social activities throughout January (or have the Will Power to resist the alcohol)

* Buddy up with a work colleague to help each other past the biscuit tin

* Sign up with a Personal Trainer (or Group PT centre!!!)

* Book a hypnotherapist to stop smoking

And here are some of the potential ‘Why’s’ for the above:

* To cleanse the Liver, clear your head and undoubtedly reduce your waistline

* To stop spiking your blood sugar throughout the day which is impeding your weight loss, and pushing you closer to Diabetes!

* Because exercise is essential and your knowledge of ‘what to do’ and ‘how to do it’ is limited at best, get a professional in! When the boiler in your house is broken you don’t try to fix it yourself, do you! Think about it!

* So you can stop burning cash, having to stand outside and reduce your risk of lung cancer!

The list goes on forever, everyone has their own reasons for changing but that’s the key, dig into the reason, if you want to lose weight, WHY? If you want to run a marathon, WHY? If you want to stop smoking, WHY?

Once you find the Why, the How will become clearer and the chances of your Resolution sticking will be much, much higher.

After several years of gaining weight along with no exercise, in June 2011 my friend invited me to a trial session at Prime Mover. This is the best thing i have ever done……

I hate gyms, well i hate exercising full stop so i wasn’t expecting to stick to it at all but i surprisingly enjoyed myself in a weird way and i have never sweat as much in my life and 5 months later i am still attending Prime Mover 3 times a week. This is a massive achievement for me.

The classes are different every time so i never knew what to expect and with hard work and motivation and following the nutritional advice from Paul and Kelly i was shocked 3 months later to realise i had lost one and half stone and dropped a dress size. I had to pinch myself as i really couldn’t take this in.

This as helped me greatly in everyday life, stress levels are down and now i feel fitter and healthier i’m more focused and have gained confidence.

A big thank you to Paul and Kelly and to my friend Jo for keeping my spirits up and motivating me to achieve a healthier way of life…..
